Quantum Key Distribution as a Function of Existing Security Infrastructure

Abstract: Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides symmetric encryption keys whose security is based on the laws of physics rather than on computational assumptions. Unlike post-quantum cryptography, which replaces vulnerable algorithms with new mathematical ones, QKD complements existing encryption equipment by supplying it with keys. The presentation summarises the experience of QRate, a Russian developer and manufacturer of QKD equipment, in national quantum communication programmes and in pilot projects with banks, telecommunications operators and critical infrastructure operators.

The technical part includes a live demonstration: a videoconference over a channel protected by quantum keys, with key generation parameters monitored in real time through the network management system. The compact QKDmini module in the form factor of a PC expansion card and the QButterfly single-photon detector developed and manufactured by QRate are presented. Particular attention is given to integration: key delivery through standard interfaces in line with ETSI specifications to third-party encryptors and IPsec VPN gateways, operation over existing optical fibre, and point-to-point, chain, star and ring network topologies. The concluding part considers QKD as a function added to existing products and infrastructure, with examples in smart cards and unmanned systems, and outlines possible formats of cooperation, including a pilot quantum line, the QLab educational laboratory and feasibility studies.
